Case Study 3: Assessment of the Impact of Alien Species on the Biodiversity 

and Endemism of Ancient Balkan lakes (Lake Ohrid Case Study) 

Kick-off Workshop

 

The Case study 3 Kick-off workshop on Assessment of the impact of Alien Species on the Biodiversity and Endemism of Ancient Balkan lakes (Lake Ohrid Case Study) was held from 25-26 December, 2015, in Ohrid, Republic of Macedonia. The workshop was organised by the Hydrobiological Institute Ohrid and attended by participants from R. Macedonia.

 

The workshop had the following objectives:

 

- Discussion on working plan, expected results, technical and other issues;

- Standardisation and harmonisation of methods, which will be applied, i.e. terminology, sampling, data collection and processing;

- Discussion on the list of alien aquatic species in Lake Ohrid and its catchment, as well as in other river catchments in R. Macedonia;

- Discussion on prioritization and early warning on alien aquatic species;

- Time table, deadlines, dissemination of project results.

 

A field trip to the Sateska River, Lake Ohrid tributary, was organised in order to select potential sampling sites.

 

The results and outcomes of the discussions and the trip have been summarised in the workshop report below.
